engaged
the past few days have been a euphoria. Saturday (technically Sunday), I proposed marriage to elli. she said yes. I do not really know if I can put into words everything I feel for her but I'll give it a try.
for those who do not know it so I was touched and elli almost exactly six months ago, that is, in Sormat. we met online and sat and chatted one night when I came up with the idea that we would now meet right away. at 4:30 we met outside the cathedral in Lund and continued talking. elli have described our first meeting that it was like we already knew each other - we just found each other again. it was just the way I felt. months before I met elli I had been pretty down there, met some people but could not muster any more interest for anyone. elli challenged me and listened in a way that I never experienced before. she was genuinely interested in what I had to say and I was equally interested in what she in turn had to tell. since then we have spent time almost every day and we must never run out of things to talk about.
about a month ago, something new to develop. I knew very early in our relationship that I loved her like I never loved someone else and suddenly it was there word on the "b" is not particularly dangerous anymore. when I'm with elli I'm home. we can sit quietly in a sofa (even if silence is a rare ingredient when we are together) and only experience peace together. we share values, interests and share the same vision of the world. the question is not if I were free, it was if I could escape to do so. I love you, elli. Leonard Cohen said it best: "to love your body, your spirit and your soul."

The Day The Earth Stood Still
and niklas I watched a double feature yesterday. First we saw the classic original of the Day The Earth Stood Still . then we went and saw the remake. Here are some reasons why I fell asleep a few minutes in the middle.
title: The Day The Earth Stood Still
actor: Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith, etc.
Director: Scott Derrickson
companies: 20th Century Fox
Length: 103 min
years: 2008
country: united states
age: varying between 11 years (Sweden / Norway) to 13 (usa / philippines)
Reviewed version: Swedish cinema edition (sf cinema city, grove 2008-12-20)
tagline: "12:12:08 Is The Day The Earth Stood Still"
document
world leaders (but mostly U.S.) shits blow when something big and threatening is heading straight for Earth. instead of blowing up the planet to smithereens slows the object down and turns out to be a huge fluorescent Christmas tree ball from space. from Christmas tree ball will Klaatu, an alien has come to be humanity that if they do not shape up, he will destroy them all as planets that may harbor advanced life is a scarce commodity in the galaxy.
spectacle
to complain about Keanu Reeves is usually like trying to find snow on the North Pole - too easy. This is, however, he is ok. it is probably that he'll play an alien who has not mastered the human body really. reeves perhaps is an alien in real life? it would explain a lot.
Jennifer Connelly is as usual good-looking but lousy. she can bear less supporting roles, as in the excellent Little Children (2006), but she is definitely not something Leading Lady material. and yes, I know she won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind (2001) but to the dunghill actually won something can still give me nightmares.
Jaden Smith well ... what can you say about Jaden Smith? I would be very surprised if he not get a raid nomination for this role. oh my god what miserable he is! here we can really see how famous parents (for those who did not know that he has a dad named Will ...) can give you opportunities that you should not have been. As a rule, tend to American child actors to be okay. Jaden Smith reminded me most of an updated version of the extremely annoying kid from shane (1953).
Supporting Role holders are a wonderful mix with Kathy Bates as Secretary of Defense (hahahahaha) and John Cleese as a professor. Cleese is only for five minutes, but manages to play the shirt of the ensambeln. it says everything about acting efforts in general.
written and directed
original movie was an exciting sci-fithriller where we basically had to follow ordinary people's reactions to a visit from space. it was clever written with a strong passion for social justice and an anti-war message that was exactly the right time in the Cold War, the early stages. what is left is a soup of kvasifilosofiskt babble, special effects masturbation and an incredibly weak and sleazy message that the human ability to feel love is going to save her from destruction.
to be fair had been original also their holes in the story, but what distinguishes the film from this is that it mostly was on the smaller things that had no specific effect on the finished script. To list all the strange turns that re-spouse takes would take too long so instead is a list of things that irritated me:
first what happened to the spaceship? why we got a Christmas tree ball instead?
second why was Gort in re-spouse at all? He had no real role.
third why is a movie made in 2008 more American-centric than a movie made in 1951?
4th each took the religious overtones of the road?
5th a problem as the original was presented to those days does not currently able to collect all the countries because the international situation was as it were. in 2008 would not be a country that is included in the present even dream of missing a statement from an alien.
6th Perhaps it was a not very subtle reference to George W Bush's "shoot first and ask questions late "policy, but would the U.S. president really react as he did and for that matter, he would hand over responsibility to the country's defense minister on such a historic event?
seventh who stole the sand effect from The Mummy (1999 )?
and so on ad infinitum. Geez.
upper hand is another of the film's problems. instead of relying on dialogue and action as the original beats Derrickson on big special effects drum at all times. in their worst moments, it is like a bad copy of Independence Day (1996). Regin acting is bad and that sour cream the rotten cake, the film is full of product placements. it becomes something very ironic about the product to place a cell phone in a movie that basically believe that environmental destruction is what will kill the planet.
Rating
yes, what can I say? a completely unnecessary update of a classic movie to. re-spouse is, unfortunately, Hollywood's biggest genre right now it feels like. the need for a change and it is now. but, as long as I and other idiots go see movies in a rush of nostalgia will be no change. just that, Jaden Smith is due to be yet another re-make - a rape of one of my favorite movies from my childhood. karate kid (1984) is about to get a "facelift". I'm crying already.

Do Scabies Get Worse After T
when I sleep so I sleep
apparently it's been an earthquake in southern Sweden this morning. a very strong such by Swedish standards as well. myself, I noticed nothing at all. think I sleep a bit for good sometimes. 4.7 on the Richter scale is much like one would let a bomb a few blocks away. Geez.

How To Mastrubate With Water
world's most skilled pizza maker
few things have occurred to me since I started to leave the academic bubble:
first I am over qualified for practically all the "dirty work" that I do not believe me nice to do. the problem is that they do not want to hire graduates who will most likely seek out something else.
second there are an awful lot of jobs out there. the problem is that you must have specialized knowledge for most of them. I have no driver's license for lift truck can not weld and do not mount plumbing installations. sad situation for me.
third cultural sector is even worse in the impoverished job than I thought.
bah. I sometimes wonder why people actually educate themselves. should evade any vocational high school and earn money now, but want to learn as you want I guess.

Russian Bare Free Vids
the annual television report
Around this time every year I usually summarize the series I follow have been developed over years and present a list of the top six television series currently. why change tradition? This is the 2008 list.
6th Lost
season: 4
placement last year: 10
why: after a really slow third season was finally lost a series to be reckoned with again. better script, more rapid development and an interesting nowadays flashbacks (or flash forwards, rather) was that now I actually can not wait for next season.
5th Heroes
season: 3
placement last year: 5
why: even heroes have gotten better this year, I can not bring the series high on the list since the competition this year has been very tough. Overall, very entertaining but minus points for the authors simply dripped some approaches and seems to have written out some characters from the series without discernible explanation.
4th Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
season: 2
placement last year: -
why: when I finally swallowed my pride and started watching a series based on a film series I adore (well, the first two anyway), I realized why it had been so much talk. when the terminator is good is it really fucking good. it has some nerperioder and / or unnecessary sections, but on the whole, it is the best series based on a movie since buffy.
third TrueBlood
season: 1
placement last year: -
why: a vampire series that takes the best of the vampire myths, highlights the ridiculous and puts events in a small hole in the American South. how can you not love it? Moreover, as an extra bonus, Alexander Skarsgård as 1,000-year-old Swedish vampire. sweet.
second Battlestar Galactica
season: 4
placement last year: 1
why: after three years, Battlestar Galactica nice to skip a placement on the list. it is still one of the most well written series I've seen, but with incredibly elaborate previous seasons are also high expectations - something that I think the series has not really been able to live up to this year. hopefully the last half of the fourth season, becoming something quite extraordinary.
first dexter
season: 3
placement last year: 2
why: last year, I was worried that the series would begin to repeat itself. it would appear that my fears were unnecessary - Dexter goes from strength to strength. it is currently the most well-written, well played and well produced television show that appears.
just off the list: 7th one tree hill (7), 8. Fringe (-), 9. scrubs (3)
bit further down the list: 10th Criminal Minds (8), Kyle XY (6)

Can You Get Throat Cancer From Second Hand Smoke
star trek, metal gear solid and more disease
bah. I'm getting sick again. it has not been two weeks since I finally kicked out last cold from my body but now it seems to be on the move again. I have a pain in the joints, head and feel generally unwell. well, it will pass.
just saw the first real trailer for Star Trek XI (which I will call it whatever JJ Abrams would like to honk at me). it was a mixed experience. I really liked that Abrams takes up the massacre which Kirk survives as a boy, and even the design of the enterprise, but then ... well, I do not really know. Zachary "Sylar" Quinto as Spock sounded like a good choice in advance but after seeing some clips of his role interpretation I do not know what to think. and lo and behold, the former so sexlösa Star Trek universe show up hot sex scenes. do not misunderstand me now, sex is always a pleasure to both watch and participate in, but in Star Trek? Likewise, this film will tear up all continuity of series and films have struggled to hold together in a little over 40 years. boring.
'm out of metal gear solid IV yesterday and although it was a mixed experience. I really liked the first game, liked the runner up some more and completely adore the third. Fourth, felt in many ways much more like a interactive movie with game elements than a game with interactive movie moments. and I know, I know that all the fanboys screaming on the internet forums out loud sky that metal gear always been that way. Sure, the previous games have been full of long cut scenes that brought the action forward, but they have been primarily game and nothing else. I think I clocked a sequence between the fourth game for a little over 45 minutes. it is not acceptable, how well organized they are. the game then? Yes, it is more of the same exciting stealth, hide and seek game that made the series famous. but why not more games and less films?

Changing
It's Time for a Change, Both here in my blog and in my life. if any non-Swedish speakers Have Been reading this blog I'd Like To thank you for the no residue. however the, I Feel That since in Mainly publish texts in english on the web my way of expressing myself in my native Swedish speed Become Somewhat lacking. hence, the now switch languages.
like that, clear and fixed. first post in Swedish. to clarify a bit of "change" going on in my life right now, I can say the following - lund university are idiots. I felt I had a good and original research field and that I was worth a place in the graduate program. it did not Scientist. Instead, my proposed site to a guy who has written about Homer and Virgil (för. .. it has not made the last 2000 years), exceeded the maximum of his master's thesis by 50 (!) pages and not have a clear thesis plan. I do not understand how they thought, but I may take me in their decision and rejoin the fight.
these new efforts is a major component in that it is now almost certainly be out of my academic career for over a month. so now I am looking job. someone who wants to hire an unemployed poor cultural workers? well, there is probably no direct panic. if it is not so that I can land a job the next few months, I have one semester of study remaining. I guess that I may write me in some fake substance and sleep away the time or something. but I'm still pretty tired and pissed on it more or less frozen academic climate at Lund University. so therefore I decided to give a shit what they say and start to do research in their spare time instead. a book will be more. the living can see.
else rolls their lives in quite well. elli is wonderful as usual and I like her in a way that I do not remember that I enjoyed staying with someone else before. Moreover, I have now both hat and mustache. I look like a Latino gangster. what you have.

Rabbit Watering Systems Homemade
local and international news
I'm beginning to feel a bit better, Which ice a source of genuine pleasure. you never appreciate your health until you don't have it anymore. got some test results today and there is something wrong with me since they wanted to draw some more blood tomorrow, but they assured me that it wasn't anything serious. more than likely the usual bad stomach and everything that follows with that.
in international news; obama! if you haven't heard the victory speech i really think you should. can be downloaded just about everywhere. a really, really good speech. and hopefully things can at least start getting back to some kind of status quo in the world so the west can focus its' attention on real issues instead of chasing terrorists under every stone that happens to have oil under it.
in local news; they tore down the student-occupied building yesterday and arrested a bunch of students, released them and the students occupied two more buildings. a couple of hours ago the police dragged the squatters out from those buildings too and lund is all in all a city filled with tension tonight. there's talk about a big manifestation outside city hall. i don't really know what to think about it all. me and elli went to see them a few weeks ago. left some cookies for them and showed support. before that i was all for it, and i guess i still am - in principle. i just wish that they didn't put up such a...stupid front. they're doing good, since they really put the living situation in lund on the map, but can't they be more like the squatters of the 60's? well-read and eloquent?
anyway, back to homework.

Can I Use A Treadmill Upstairs
post of immense self-pity
yes, i pity myself tonight, even though i know that it doesn't help anyone or anything - least of all my self. for two fucking weeks i've been more or less under the weather. fever, sore throat, muscles pains, embarrassing stomach issues and on and on and on. i've been poked, prodded, had my blood taken and other stuff which i'd rather forget. still, it's one step forward, two steps back. like last night. i was in kind of a good mood. sure, i had a little fever and my throat was killing me, but it still felt like i'd hit a turning point. yeah, right, this morning i woke up with worse throat than ever, the muscle pains had returned and no word on any of the tests i took.
and in the middle of all this, elli's been an angel with her patience and i feel like my bad temper for being ill is spilling out over her. i don't want that. elli's my rock. so, anyone have any idea on how long you can have fever before it starts getting dangerous? i mean, it's not a high fever (then i wouldn't be healthy enough to complain) but it's still there. anyway, officially worst halloween ever.

Why Write A Holographic Will
time to switch focus?
read in the paper this morning that there will be yet another benefit show for breast cancer fund raising. don't get me wrong, i'm all for fund raising for good causes, but isn't it time to switch focus? in a related article i read that today about 90% of all people (not just women, men can get breast cancer too, you know) are saved. still a high number of patients that don't make it, but a 90% chance of survival isn't half bad. so, i decided to look up some numbers. apparently, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but has "only" a fatality rate of about 1%. in sweden, where i live, the second most common type of cancer is prostate cancer which affects about 10.000 men each year. around 65% diagnosed with this disease are cured. it seems to me that if a more common form of cancer than breast cancer is deadlier funds should be redistributed to research the former. then again, i guess a prostate isn't as sexy as a breast. what do i know?

Gay Cruising Spots Las Vegas Nv
the midnight meat train
title: the midnight meat train
starring: bradley cooper, leslie bibb, vinnie jones etc.
director: ryuhei kitamura
producer: lions gate films
length: 100 min
year: 2008
country: usa
rated: ranging from 16 years of age (holland) to 21 (!) years of age (singapore)
reviewed copy: dvd preview copy
tagline: "the most terrifying ride you'll ever take"
plot
leon kauffman is an aspiring photographer living with his girlfriend maya in new york city. after being told by a big shot in the art world that his photos lack what he's looking to portray (a "real" portrayal of the city) leon starts going out late night hunting for motives. when he scares off a gang of thugs trying to rape a model he also gets a great shot. however, a few days later the model disappears without a trace.
acting
generally well over the standard of your average horror movie. cooper is good in his role as the increasingly obsessed photographer kauffman and vinnie jones, despite (or maybe "because off") having only two lines in the entire movie is one eerie bad guy. the only one giving a slightly substandard performance is leslie bibb as kauffman's girlfriend maya. be on the lookout for some semi-known actors and actresses in smaller parts, such as brooke shields and ted raimi.
direction & script
based on the clive barker short story by the same name (you can find a review of that in the archive under "books of blood" if you're interested) this is an in my mind successful expansion of the storyline to incorporate more human relationships. while the story was short and creepy the script has a tendency to become somewhat long-winded. other than that i have no complaints about the script - a truthful adaptation to barker's original short story. the direction is also good with one or two really misplaced scenes. the one i reacted at was the sex scene between leon and maya. did anyone else get the feeling she was...raped? she sure as hell didn't look like she enjoyed it anyhow. cut to next morning and a typical "good morning, honey" kind of scene. did i miss something here? apart from this sequence the movie is tightly directed with a bleak and realistic sort of look not often found in american horror movies these days. one thing i feel i have to mention is the special effects. while generally good, all of a sudden some really terrible cgi rears its' ugly head. and this is not just slightly sub.par effects work but rather breaks the suspension of disbelief.
bottom line
this film is altogether one of the better horror movies i've seen this year. it's not excellent, but it had me in my seat for 100 min without glancing at the time, which is a good sign if any. if graphic horror with a touch of psychology is your deal, this one's for you. and yes, it has a surprise ending that i'm not giving away, but which i suspect people will either love or hate. i kinda like it.

Tile And Trim Around Tub
the presidental debates
ok, so we've seen mccain taking on obama and biden taking on palin. here are my thoughts:
mccain vs. obama
my first impressions were that mccain is the better debater, but obama had the better arguments. neither are great public speakers though. mccain was kind of transparent in the points he was trying to make though, i.e. "obama isn't experienced enough" and "i've been in the military, i know what it's like". the first argument, well, you can't really argue with that. then again, experience doesn't equal wisdom. the second argument however is pure bullshit. yes, you were in the military, but what did you do? spend a couple of years as a p.o.w. is what. you are not the "great warrior" you'd like to portray yourself as, now are you? another thing that bothered me was the constant claims from mccain that obama did this and obama did that when it only took the first few seconds of obama's reply to realize that mccain was talking out of his ass. all in all, i thought that it was a close call deciding who "won" the debate, but i'd have to go with obama. more valid arguments, a calm which his opponent didn't show and an altogether better presentation.
biden vs. palin
sometimes i wonder if the journalists of the world basically are puppets controlled by some evil mastermind. i've been reading in the papers and in the blogs covering the campaigns that the debate was a tie. a tie?! palin got her ass kicked! she had no real valid arguments when it came to a single issue and she replied to biden's questions and claims with a rhetoric that was as transparent as water. what's wrong with people? did we see the same debate? palin was like a schoolgirl dressed up in grown-up clothes. biden crushed her!
very well, we'll see how it turns out. right now i'm not positive that obama will win. why? because the public consists of wankers in general.

How To Spray Paint A Bmx
smoking and the world
yes, it's happened again. this morning i was told off for smoking by a complete stranger. this really grinds my gears. here's my little theory behind the witch-hunt on smokers - we always need a scape goat. because, let's face it, if it wasn't cigarettes society would get their knickers in a collective bunch over it would be, oh i don't know, things that matter? things that effect the entire planet? such as the use of fossilized fuel? countries still testing nuclear weapons? the energy debate? international politics? i don't know, i'll just let bill hicks do the talking for now since i'm sick to death of all the anti-smoking propaganda:
"i smoke, if this bothers anyone i recommend you look around in the world we live and shutting your fucking mouth. [...] non-smokers, are you ready? this is by the way a fact too. non-smokers, ready? drum roll. non-smokers die every day! hahahahahaha, sleep tight. oh, the truth shall set you free. i know you non-smokers entertain some type of eternal life fantasy because you don't smoke cigarettes. well, let me be the first to pop that bubble and send you on your way with a little truth: you're going to fucking die." - bill hicks, flying saucer tour 1991.

Wedding Welcome Note For Invitation
it's time
it's time to apply for my doctorate position with the university. damn i'm nervous. and the worst part is that i have to wait a month before i get word if i've gotten the job. also, there are only three positions opening up this year. if i can't get in now i guess...i guess i'll have to take some menial job and work for a year or so. but i don't want to. i am a student, have always been a student and plan to be a student for the rest of my life. yes, yes, i know i'll have to teach as well as a part of the program, but still, it will sure as hell beat the rat race. i've been there and there's something with "traditional" work that just doesn't sit right with me. i get restless and unhappy. oh well, should get going to school now.

Milena Velba And Black Woman
black widow
if i needed more proof of the global warming i got it yesterday. apparently, the black widow, previously indigenous to mainly southeastern usa, has made a new home here in sweden. yes, in sweden, the land of the freezing your ass off winters. it's no news that we've gotten all kinds of nasty critters with the import of exotic fruits and vegetables, but what is news is that now our climate is warm enough for these nasty buggers to establish colonies here as well. time to make that move to svalbard methinks.
